The impressive brick building between Mollwitzstrasse and Pulsstrasse is one of the most stunning buildings in Charlottenburg, and dates from around the turn of the 20th century. It was used as a maternity hospital, before closing its doors in 2005.

We converted the central part of the hospital into two large apartments. The first has been renovated into a 280 m2 apartment.

This unique experience begins when you enter the room. A clear and purist entrance ensures a calm and inviting arrival into the room upon entering the apartment. Flush doors, reduced shapes and colours and a focus on the essentials underline the minimalist design in play. A floor-to-ceiling pivot door forms the end of the entrance – at the same time, when open, it offers the first tentative glimpses of the apartment’s main axis.

The apartment’s heart consists of a flowing sequence of rooms made up of spacious areas for dining, cooking and living. The ensemble – all staged in a natural light stretches from north to south and culminates in “The Octagon” – a 100-square-metre plaza that is much more than just a living area. The living area appears as a large bay window, and frames the panoramic view into the leafy park of the historic hospital. This sense of spatial generosity and the particularity of the geometry are unique in Berlin. The interior design is based on the existing listed building, and can be described as a playful reinterpretation of this historically sacred architecture, which is reflected as a preserved chapel on the floor below. The design principle enables an exciting and atmospheric interplay with light, shadow and spatial sequences.

The custom-made kitchen unit is the central element of the apartment. The grey green marbled monolith with a velvety textured surface is a spectacular place for daily life. Subtle in appearance, yet fully equipped with functions and an inviting seating niche facing the balcony, the green furniture wall expands the cooking area around a generous dining area at the end of the room’s axis. The sunny (and spacious) outdoor area offers plenty of room for relaxation under the open sky.

The main bedroom offers the most private space in the apartment. The spacious yet quiet bedroom is connected to the bathroom areas via a hidden anteroom, and forms a harmonious unit. The direct connection to the balcony terrace extends the sleeping area with a cosy green oasis outside. The architectural theme of flowing room sequences is taken up again and consistently implemented, especially in the master bathroom. The master bathroom boasts an anteroom with monolithic bathtub and beautiful wash basin designed for the apartment. Behind it follows a separate shower area with luxurious spa elements for those perfect moments of comfort.

In addition to the master area, the apartment offers two further bedrooms with direct access to the large balcony terrace. Bright and inviting during the day, the bedrooms transform into quiet and cosy retreats in the evening. A compact bathroom area, which can also be used for guests, completes the room ensemble. The sauna’s geometric counterpart is a room that remains in direct contact with the open-plan living area.

All surfaces and materials have been selected with attention to detail, and installed with the utmost delicacy and refinement. The high degree of quality is not only visually noticeable, but can also be experienced haptically. Natural stone, herringbone oak parquet flooring, solid oak built-in furniture, polished-exposed screed, and Canadian cedar in the master bathroom create an interior that radiate timelessness and longevity.
